During this project a range of mediums have been explored
including: letterpress, monoprint and spray painting. As this is a first year
project I felt it extremely important to explore, as may processes as possible
in order to gather a wider stance next year.
In order to develop the final piece a range of materials
were firstly explored in an attempt to mimic wood. Brown paper was the first
medium in which the design was constructed, a flimsy material in which wasn’t
durable and didn’t appear similar to wood. Cardboard was then explored with the
tone appearing too light to appear wood like. I experimented by painting the
material but found that the cards texture then became uneven.
Research was then conducted into card in which appears
similar to wood, whereby I found a strong card in which followed a wood format.
After developing two approaches from this material (one with symmetrical and
the other with asymmetrical lines), I scanned the designs in and explored with
type. I decided to scan in the approach rather than sending it off physically
as the card was bulky, and thus when folded caused crease lines.
When exploring the design using C.A.D a variation of type
compositions were expressed. The colour of the wood was also altered in an
attempt to make the design appear as if it was created from actual wood.
