Research into cards

In order to gain a greater stance upon the ways in which cards may exclude individuals from diffrent backgrounds, a small study task was completed whereby cards that appear to have a specific cultural/religious/sexual ordination have been outlined.

Although appearing neutral the usage of the word 'nan' excludes may individuals from buying this product. As I personally refer to my grandmother as 'Nain' due to my welsh heritage, I would be unable to buy this product for her as she would not appreciate its design, and thus I would be much more likely to buy a card in which expressed a neutral design in which she would appreciate. As 8.3 million individuals in the UK are immigrants this is a large proportion in which are excluded from such greetings cards. There is also an added 3 million people living in Wales in which are also excluded from this. Thus if a neutral design was completed that is an added 11 million people to the target market.

Humour by nature. this cards design highlights issues/aggravations in which occur within most relationships whether gay/straight/religious. As a result of this it is fair to suggest a similar design would work effectively within my designs, although it must be considered that the majority of 18-25 year olds are single and not living with a partner.

A simple illustrative design in which contains no language, just the internationally known symbol for love. This card may be given on multiple occasions and thus is open to a wide audience. Examples of this being: birthdays, thank you, valentines, anniversarys.

Again iconography has been used in which can be applied to multiple cultures and genders. No text allows for the card to again be used on multiple occasions.

Although typography has been used upon this approach it does not appear biased, and thus may be used by many.

As mothers day is a traditionally British event this card may exclude those who do not celebrate the event, and thus cannot use this design for any other reasonings.

What've I learnt:

  • Text can often exclude cultures
  • Love is an internationally known symbol an thus this may be used.
  • Often no text allows the cards to be used upon multiple occasions
  • Humour is apparent upon all platforms, as long as it is not offensive.
