Research into elephant pumps/pump aid and the countries

Pump Aids relationship with Harrogate water

Harrogate Water Brands has been working with Pump Aid since 2007 in order to try and make a difference to a global problem. Since then through their brand ‘Thirsty Planet’ they have raised over £1.6 million for Pump Aid and changed the lives of thousands of people in Malawi. For every litre sold Thirsty Planet donates at least 4p to Pump Aid which helps us provide clean water, improved sanitation and hygiene education to some of the poorest communities in Malawi.

James Cain, Managing Director told us ‘Water Brands researched and considered many charities to support during the creation of Thirsty Planet Spring Water. The professionalism and effectiveness demonstrated by Pump Aid was overwhelming and meant the decision to support them was indisputable.

The partnership approach taken by both Harrogate Water Brands and Pump Aid has been paramount to making the relationship so successful. A number of field trips have taken place during the period and the results of Pump Aid’s efforts are staggering.

Thirsty Planet are delighted with how Pump Aid has helped engage with its customers, while being impressed by the thoroughness and expertise Pump Aid continues to provide. The availability of the UK team and their willingness to provide impactful and informative data and case studies has been extremely valuable.

Harrogate Water Brands remain excited at further growing the levels of our donations to Pump Aid, enabling their invaluable work to continue in sub-Saharan Africa.’

How does the Elephant Pump work?

The Elephant Pump sits above a well, which is dug by hand by local workers making it possible to dig wells in remote locations where it wouldn’t be feasible to bring in mechanical diggers. The water from the well is lifted to the surface by a rope with small washers attached which is guided through a pipe and around a wheel which rotates when a user turns the handle to collect water.
