Structure of gift bag (3)

The structure of gift bag was widely explored in order to develop an interesting shape that would engage that of a younger audience. A variety of bag designs were sketched in a 3D format in order to express how the the design may appear in real life. As the set is about being culturally appropriate key considerations must be made when completing the designs structure such as using vegan glue/stock. This is extremely important when considering glue as many glues use cow fats and thus would not be appropriate for Hindu's as cows are sacred in their religion.

The designs in which stand out to myself the most are that of the scallop bags, and the bag in which expresses a handle slot. I believe these to be most effective as the designs in which contain a closed aspect do not allow certain objects to fit within the bag. Where as having an open bag allows for larger products to 'stick out' of the original bags design.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               When asking my peers which structure they prefer there was a large preference towards the scallop design as it is said to maintain the feminine aspect in which the set attempts to express. As a result of this it was decided that the scallop approach would allow for the best possible outcome.

The measurements of the bags design was explored in order to ensure that the flat design would work effectively. Handles were added to the gift bags design as they were largely referenced within the research. it was also decided that the gift bag should take a portrait approach, this again being in reference to the primary research conducted.

Nets were outlined in order to formulate the bags structure. Not only is this important for the flat design but the net may also be included within my submission in order to express to the judges that I have an extensive knowledge upon packaging design. Tabs were included in order to explore with the connecting elements of the net. In order to ensure these nets worked small mock ups were developed.

As the original net did not contain a small connecting tab the body of the mock up would not hold together. The bag also felt somewhat stiff as the sides did not bend inwards, this will be an element in which I change for the future net. Scallops must also be added in order to mimic the design further.

As the previous net was unsuccessful a second was developed in which contained the alterations from the previous. As a result of this a strong connecting net was made. Scallops must also be added to this in order to explore the nets design further.

The net was explored with in order to develop a strong basis. The scallop was added to allow for a realistic interpretation. Fold marks were also added so that the sides are easily folded, this being essential as the original mock up was very stiff.
