Screenprint exhbition-Play it out loud

The 'Play it loud' exhibition was visited as it focuses directly upon screenprinted gig posters. As these are posters for events I felt that it would be beneficial to visit the exhibition as this may influence my design.

Many of the gig posters were highly complex with a minimum of five screens being used. This in turn allowed multiple colours to be used. This was highly effective as the mass colours used are very contrasting to that of the simple screenprints I have been previously exposed to. Although I would like to develop a design of such detail, I am unsure upon whether screenprinting skill is at such standard.

Opacity was highly relevant when exploring the screenprints as it became evident that the 'overlapping' of colours can be really effective. It also became apparent that this would have to be explored extensively as certain colours appear clearer than others.

Some designs focused purely upon one colour. This in turn allowing for a design in which appears highly crisp. The above design explores how a single tone approach can express immense detail. It may also be suggested that the above design may have appeared less effective if developed in multiple colours.

White type was often overlaid over mass colours in order to project a clean, clear message. This also allows contrast to appear present within the design.

The director of the exhibition also made live screenprints. It was interesting upon how he did this as his process differed from that learnt within university. This is most likely due to the mass colours used.

From visiting the exhibition I gained a greater knowledge upon what can be derived through screenprint and colours in which appeared effective. I would suggest that some of the best designs I encountered explored a large contrast, with white typography usually being present.
