My first mock up was that of the sleeve in which people from both Leeds and Manchester would graffiti. This mock up was creating by asking fellow LCA students to complete some form of street art upon the piece. By doing this it allows for a varied approach, in which I myself would have not taken. One factor that must be conisdered is whether it is ethical to sell others sketches upon my cover.
With these designs I explored engaging layouts in which may intrest the consumer. These designs explore a very minimal format and thus it is debatable whether or not they are effective, especially as they contain no handrendered aspect. As I will be using bookcloth it would also be very difficult to screenprint these images upon, and thus a sleeve would most likely be used.
When asking my peers upon what they think of these ideas the follwoing comments were suggested:
-The sleeve in question sells street art, a factor in which is highly contraditory to that of street art, as unlike other fine arts the profit is not the main focus. Due to this some element must be altered in order to express an idea in which is more appropriate to the book. The idea of a half sleeve is very effective and would engage the young consumer.
-The second idea focuses purely on imagery, a factor in which is contradictory to the street art style. Maybe some form of written aspect should be involved, or the design should be pushed to appear corporate on purpose, in turn developing a juxtaposition.
From this feedback, I will develop more research and attempt to develop some more appropriate designs. One factor in which I gained from this was that a sleeve is a highly effective method, in which not only protects the book but would make it aesthetically pleasing. Due to this sleeves are likely to be explored further.
