first book cover sketches
From the initial research sketches were developed focusing upon the street art theme. Multiple approaches were explored, all in which attempt to highlight the ethos of the book. Photomontage, screenprint, foiling, embossing and sleeves were explored, in order to make the design as visually pleasing as possible.
Designs in which felt most impactive were that of 4, 5, 10 and 15. A small outline of these is expressed below.
4-A half sleeve approach has been used in order to allow the design to appear visually engaging. This would also protect the book, but would appear largely aesthetical. The sleeve itself would contain multiple graffiti pieces in which would be developed by people within Leeds and Manchester. In order to do this both places would have to be visited again, and random civilians must be confronted to complete this. This process may also be filmed, with could then be added to a social media aspect of the book.
5-simplistic, this approach explores a sticker containing text being placed upon the front cover. The minimalistic style would not hint to the inside theme and thus would create an enigma between the product and consumer.
10- Screenprinted, this approach explores the overlapping of text in order to express colour. A hand drawn approch would be used in order to embed the idea of 'hand written type with an urban location' this in turn embedding the context of the book.
15-This approach explores a minimal photographical layout, in which would express one of the strongest images from the book. Not text would be used in order for an enigma to be apparent.
