Design culture
The book design culture focuses upon of theory and practical relating specifically to the effects of contemporary design. Key, design relevant information was gained from this. Firstly it was suggested that structure and surface merge into design today, with designers conceiving of form organically, generating fluid surfaces in places of rigid structure. Suggesting that the designer has become the orchestrator of environments and experience of materials.
Secondly it was suggested that in a culture whereby images and materials are recycled, reused and discarded, designers today reclaim abandoned artifacts. With designers drawing from social and cultural history. Design being conceived in terms of its cultural environment.
In relation to my publication, key factors can be drawn from this information. firstly, it is essential that the materials used to build the publication are suitable to its environment, or even contrast its environment, in order to state a context. Secondly, the design must be conceived in terms of its cultural environment, therefore the magazine, must be relevant to the LGBTQ movement.
Neon
Neon presents how colour can be easily infiltrated into a design, making it stand out. It promotes multiple visual examples in which physically highlight this, promoting legibility for a reason. One of the key examples of this, is that of the box label deigns, whereby a neon pink has been used in order to make the label easy to read, and to stand out to the individuals processing the parcel. When thinking specifically about how this may influence the magazine design, it is key to note that one of the key attributes of magazines gaining attention is that of the front cover and thus bold colours may be explored.
