Selecting a specific area of cardiovascular disease

As cardiovascular disease has multiple components I had to think specifically about which area of the disease will be tackled, as tackling the whole subject area would not allow for a specific calculated approach.

When completing further research it became evident that Every 7 minutes someone in the UK will have a heart attack/cardiac arrest, compared to a stroke in which occurs every 12 minutes. As a result of this it is fair to suggest that heart attacks/cardiac arrest effect a larger proportion of individuals within the UK and therefore would have a far greater audience.  From this it has been decided that this will be my focus.

When completing the research to decide upon the above information, key statics were also uncovered. These have been listed below.
  • 1 million men and nearly 500,000 women are living with the after effects of a heart attack.
  • 600,000 men and 600,000 women are living with the after effects of a stroke.
  • Over 1.6 million men and over 1 million women are living with CHD.
  • 800,000 people are living with heart failure.
  • Overall CVD is estimated to cost the UK economy 19 billion - 46% direct healthcare costs, 34% productivity losses and 20% to informal care of people with CVD.
