Ibis mini brief-research

Wall design

Wall patterns have been used in this case in order to formulate an interesting design in which is able to engage the audience. A geometric pattern has been used alongside the company's colours to develop a design in which appears effective and builds the company's brand.

Bold colours have been used in order to gain the consumer's attention. Block colours with a limited palette create a strong yet endearing approach. The amount of colours used must be considered within the my own design piece.

Creative block shapes have been used in order to develop an eyecatching approach in which draws the consumer attention. A direction is placed within the design in which leads the consumers eyes. This should be considered as the desk will be the main focus in which the design aims to highlight.

Within this design a simple silhouette has been used in order to dictate the citys landscape. This may be an effective way at outlining the citys key characteristics, and iconic buildings.

City murals

Murals are often found in mass upon walls, often developed by street artists. A selction of murals for both passion and profit have been outlined below. Multiple medias are expressed such as screenprint and graffiti.

Highlighting a cities main features is one of the most prominent ideas when completing a mural. Iconic buildings/amenities are often included. The city depicted within the above picture evidently has a large rail network, hence the envolvment of the railway.

London. An iconic city by nature. The usage of the emblematic red bus, alongside that of Britains most iconic building, the houses of parliament, clearly represents the city. An symbolic blue has been used to depict the sky in order to embed the countries patriotic colours.

The OXO building being another one of London's famous buildings, is again visualised in patriotic colours, although this time the colours further relate the the actual product of OXO completing an ironic twist upon the building in which contains no relation. Shading has been used in order to develop a three dimensional approach, a factor in which engages the audience and makes the design more visually impactive.

Although highly detailed, this city map expresses the different burros of London, highlighting to the consumer how large the city really is. The city is also not commonly depicted in this way and thus this appears highly interesting. If I were to complete a similar map for that of Leeds, this may be an effective way in which to express the city to new arrivals.

The above approach explores a 'typical' mural, whereby spray paint has been used. Although I believe this to be effective it must be questioned whether having 'graffiti' within a hotel whereby the price is £80 a night is applicable.

Timeline

Timeline approaches have been explored in order to depict a way in which important facts may be depicted surrounding Yorkshire.

Within the first approach bold colours have been used in order to highlight key information as well as gaining mass attention. The colour approaches appear strong and in some cases may make the type appear difficult to read. This must be considered if a similar approach was conducted.

Shapes have been used in this instance in order to convey an easy to read, interesting design. The typography is much larger than in the first approach and therefore is more impactive.

Minimal in nature this design is clean, clear and effective. A bold orange has been used alongside black in order to create an exciting path format. A similar piece to this would be effective and would not overpower the design of the building.

Again bold colours and large type have been used in order to complete an approach in wich is easy to read, and navigate. It's nature also allows for the consumer to be easily informed about relevant information.

Initial Drawings

From the research discovered some initial drawings were developed upon paths in which my design may take. The idea of famous faces of Yorkshire was discussed although this may be dependant upon current trends, meaning that my design may have a limited lifespan. Other ideas included Key Yorkshire iconography being placed within one scene, this could be illustrated or completed by a copy and paste method. Two timeline approaches were expressed whereby iconic Yorkshire events are recorded. This may focus upon a less historical aspect and more a fun fact approach as this would be suitable to all.

When discussing these ideas with my peers they suggested that the famous faces did have a limited approach, especially as famous individuals have frequently left Yorkshire for London etc. They then went on to suggest that physically depicting Yorkshire would be effective, especially if done in a fun, innovative format such as copy and paste. The timeline effect was also widely discussed with a fact timeline appearing most relevant to all ages. As a result of this I decided to complete further sketches of the two relevant ideas.

Firstly drawings were conducted upon the timeline approach. Shapes were explored with a circle being deemed as the most friendly, compared to that of the sharp square. (The design in which I aim to develop should be friendly in order to convey the hotel, and Yorkshire as a friendly place.) The idea of small illustrations were also discussed although I am unsure whether this is appropriate, as it may overcomplicate the design. When asking my peers about the illustrations they suggested that this may work, although less facts would have to appear, thus forcing the design to become less engaging.

I was also unsure upon whether the timeline should express facts about Yorkshire or Leeds specifically, and thus advice was again gained from my peers. They suggested that Yorkshire should be the main focus due to it being a Yorkshire hotel, although leeds may have a central focus.

The idea of visually representing Yorkshire was again sketched in multiple formats. The idea of the cities skyline was explored, as Leeds has prominent architecture. Typographical approaches were also explored, although I personally believe that the basic illustrations felt far more impactive.

From the drawings I have decided to take key influencing elements and attempt to develop an impactful, yet contextual design using CAD. CAD being important as the image has to be 300 dpi.
