How are books consumed by young people?

As it is often thought that young poeple no longer read I decided to conduct some research into this, the below statement was found at :https://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/sep/12/young-read-more-books-than-older-generation-research

'Pew Research’s survey of more than 6,000 Americans of 16 and over found that 88% of Americans under 30 read a book in the past year, compared with 79% of those age 30 and older. Adults of 65 and over were the age group least likely to have read a book in the past year, said Pew.The typical number of titles read in the past year by younger Americans who read at least one book was 10, with 43% of millennials saying they read on a daily basis, compared to 40% of older adults.'

From this survey it is fair to suggest that young people are definitely reading more than their predecessors and thus it must be questioned whether the way in which they consume books has differed. So are young people more likely to read a printed book or ebook?

'Luke Mitchell carried out the survey to mark the launch of ‘SYN: State of the Youth Nation’, a new research tool from market research company YouthSight. Out of 1,000 respondents aged 16-24, 64% said they preferred print books, 16% said ebooks, and 20% said they didn’t mind.'

Where people bought books in 2015

  • Online is the #1 selling channel: 23% of market, vs. retail chains at 21%
  • 21% of fiction was purchased online in 2015
  • Younger readers are bigger supporters of bricks and-mortar retail while older buyers buy online
  • Traditional book clubs (e.g. Bookspan) still capture significant part of older adult market – 20% female buyers and 16% of 65+ female buyers

What have I learnt from this?

-Young people (18-30) prefer printed books compared to that of ebooks
-The market for a younger audience is relatively large, as they are more likely to buy/read books than their elders.
-Younger audiences are more likely to buy books from stores than online.
